Summer School

The Summer School was organized within the PANORAMA project by the University of Bordeaux and the University of Leiden in collaboration with KIC EIT Raw Materials labelled and the EIT labeled International Doctoral School on Functional Materials Innovation (IDS-FunMat-Inno) funded by EIT RawMaterials.

The educational activities within Panorama are organized in WP2 “Professional development, learning and education”, led by the University of Bordeaux. The objective of this WP is to coordinate educational activities within the project in order to disseminate the results with an educational goal to a wide audience, not only one with a scientific background. This translates in the quick availability of results as training materials for professionals and students.

The Summer School is an activity related to this WP2 “Professional development, learning and education”.

The specific goals of planning an event such as the Summer School were:

  • Improve understanding of the value chain of raw materials;
  • Learn about Material Flow Analysis (MFA) and Input-Output Analysis (IO) to support the transition to a circular economy;
  • Share the preliminary results and methodological findings of PANORAMA;
  • Support students in better communicating their research results.

Key number of the Summer School

  • 3 days event
  • 38 participants, of which 30 PhD students
  • 7 organisers from University of Bordeaux and University of Leiden
  • Participants of 14 countries

Structure of the Summer School

Due to the current covid-19 crisis and its impact on mobility, the Summer School was planned as a hybrid event. Thus, participants could participate both online and inperson. The Summer School took place in hybrid mode, at the University of Bordeaux(France) and online, from September 16th to 18th respectively, from 8h30 to 17h30. Zoom was the platform chosen for the online development of the event.

The program was developed to have two technical days focused on metrics to assess material stocks and flows. Yet, due to the profile of the participants, which were mainly PhD candidates, the third day was reserved for the development of other professional skills. It was considered that the development of those soft skills could also be very interesting for all the participants and even something they may not have many opportunities to practice.

After the finalization of the Summer School, a survey was sent to all the participants. The participants were asked about their general satisfaction of the event and the overall opinion was very positive. These results are highly appreciated when it is taken into account that in this type of events, where the participants have different backgrounds, it can be quite challenging to offer content that meets the expectations of everyone.
